How to Calibrate the GE XMTC6211 Hydrogen Analyzer in Oxygen?
Many customers in power plants who use hydrogen gas systems have purchased GE's XMTC6211 thermal hydrogen analyzer to measure hydrogen content in oxygen. The typical measurement range is 0–5% or 0–2%. However, some users are unsure about how to properly calibrate this device. When it comes to calibration, finding a gas mixture with exactly 2% or 5% hydrogen in oxygen can be challenging and potentially unsafe. In reality, during factory calibration, the instrument is usually calibrated using a gas mixture of 3.5% hydrogen in nitrogen. Below is an example of an original calibration report from the manufacturer.
During the calibration process, a span gas containing 3.5% hydrogen in nitrogen was used. The calibration report showed that the output signal from the thermal bridge component corresponded to 1.87% hydrogen in oxygen. Therefore, for subsequent recalibration, you should also prepare a 3.5% hydrogen-in-nitrogen standard gas as the span gas. There are two common methods to verify the performance of the XMTC6211 hydrogen analyzer.
Method 1: Use PanaView or IDM software to adjust the full-scale range of the instrument to 1.87% oxygen. Save the settings and then introduce the 3.5% hydrogen-in-nitrogen gas. Once the instrument stabilizes, switch the S3 dial switch to the SPAN position and press the S1 button for 20 seconds. After verification, return the meter range to its original setting.
Method 2: Connect an ammeter in series with the 4–20mA output of the instrument. Observe the current reading when the 3.5% hydrogen-in-nitrogen gas is introduced. If the output is not 18.95mA as shown in the calibration report, use PanaView or IDM software to adjust it to 18.95mA.
To verify the secondary display unit, follow these steps:
1. Introduce zero gas into the secondary meter calibration menu. Once the output current stabilizes, enter the corresponding current value for the ZERO gas.
2. Introduce the span gas into the secondary meter calibration menu. After the instrument output stabilizes, input the current value corresponding to the SPAN gas.
