There may be a shortage of global hard drive market in the second half of this year

The price of traditional mechanical hard drives on the global market has been running low for a long time. Nowadays, people are quite accustomed to buying large-capacity HDD products with 1TB, 2TB or even 3TB using the “cabbage price”. However, according to Taiwan media's information from local hard disk parts manufacturers, the global HDD hard disk market may show an out-of-stock condition in the second half of the year.

It is quite surprising that the alleged shortage is also attributed to the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 this year. Texas Instruments and Renesas Electronics, the major suppliers of hard disk chips, suffered losses in the earthquake. Although their factories have now returned to production, due to the resumption of work after suspension of work, the quality of test products needs to be re-tested, and their shipments are unlikely to quickly return to their original levels.

According to past practice, the demand for hard disks in the global market will reach a peak in the third quarter, and the impact of shortage of chip products will appear at that time, resulting in a shortage of global hard disk market in the second half of this year.
