China is a major manufacturing country, and it should be the largest user of robots in production. However, Chinese robots are still mainly used in application rather than in the research, development, and production of advanced robotic systems. There is a gap of 15 to 20 years between China and the world’s leading countries in robot technology.
The scale of production and performance of China's industrial robot industry still lag far behind that of foreign counterparts. For example, in fields like welding and assembly, foreign companies dominate the market with more advanced technology and higher-quality products. While some basic robots, such as handling robots, have a high level of localization, more complex technologies remain largely controlled by international manufacturers.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Ross once made a notable comment on China’s “robot revolution,†stating that China is developing faster than any other country in the world in terms of industrial robotics. This is true—China has seen rapid growth in the application of robots. However, when it comes to core technologies like production, R&D, and key components, China still trails by about 15 to 20 years.
Industrial robots were first developed in the U.S., but as manufacturing moved overseas, the U.S. robot industry has not kept up. Countries like Germany, Japan, and Sweden now lead in industrial robotics, particularly in areas like basic components and technological upgrades. China is currently in the catching-up phase.
Many so-called Chinese robot companies are actually system integrators, importing foreign equipment and integrating it into local industrial environments. These supporting technologies may not be highly sophisticated, but they require significant effort and expertise. The real challenge lies in developing core components such as controllers and reducers, which involve advanced materials and precision machining. Without solving these fundamental issues, China will struggle to match foreign products in both performance and cost.
It's also important to note that industrial robots are not cheap, and cutting corners through low-cost labor isn't a sustainable path for long-term development. China's current manufacturing efficiency, quality standards, and workforce capabilities also impose certain limitations. For instance, in highly automated car production, fewer workers are needed compared to traditional methods.
China’s large number of manufacturing companies has created a strong demand for industrial robots. According to the International Federation of Robotics, China became the world’s largest industrial robot market in 2013. However, the full potential of this market hasn’t been realized yet. Unlike Japan and Germany, where high labor costs drive robot adoption, China still relies heavily on a large, low-cost labor force for repetitive tasks.
Despite these challenges, China has several advantages. It has a large pool of engineering and technical personnel, even if the proportion is not high. This talent base can support the long-term development of the robotics industry.
One common misunderstanding is that robots are simply automation. In reality, automation involves more than just machines—it includes software for process management, logistics, and even financial systems. China still needs to invest more in these areas to fully realize the potential of industrial robotics.
