Steel frame welding process

Steel frames are a common component in welding structures. When welding a steel frame, it is important to follow a proper sequence to ensure structural integrity and minimize distortion. The process typically begins by welding the joint between the web and the gusset plate. After that, the welds connecting the upper and lower chords to the gusset plate should be performed. It's crucial not to concentrate all the welding at one time, but instead to distribute the work across different nodes. This helps prevent excessive heat buildup and reduces the risk of warping. The recommended welding sequence is illustrated in Figure 11-8. This diagram clearly shows the order in which each joint should be welded for optimal results. It’s best to complete as many welds as possible in a single session, following the guidelines provided in Figure 11-9. This approach ensures even distribution of stress and enhances the overall strength of the structure.
