OSRAM SMARTRIX module and Jaguar E-PACE guard against night driving safety

The OSRAM SMARTRIX matrix lighting module is now making its debut in the new Jaguar E-PACE, offering an innovative and safer driving experience at night. Developed in collaboration with Varroc Lighting Systems, this advanced module features an adaptive high beam (ADB) system that ensures optimal visibility even in challenging weather conditions. The intelligent control of light distribution on the road helps drivers spot potential hazards quickly while minimizing glare for oncoming traffic. Thanks to OSRAM’s durable silicon lenses, the design of headlights has become more compact and efficient, keeping up with modern trends in sleek, low-profile automotive lighting. Hans-Joachim Schwab, CEO of OSRAM Special Lighting, commented: “As a global leader in automotive lighting, OSRAM continues to push boundaries with our SMARTRIX technology. Partnering with Jaguar Land Rover once again highlights our commitment to innovation. The E-PACE uses our 20-pixel LED system to illuminate the road ahead with exceptional clarity, enhancing nighttime safety.” Despite fewer cars on the road at night, accident rates remain higher due to poor visibility and glare from oncoming headlights. To address this, the SMARTRIX module integrates a front-facing camera with image processing software and smart lighting technology. This allows the headlights to automatically adjust their beam pattern, eliminating glare for other drivers while maximizing visibility for the driver. These intelligent LED matrix systems remove the need for manual switching between high and low beams, improving convenience and safety. Each SMARTRIX module includes 10 Oslon black flat LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors, enabling up to 20 pixels per headlight. Even under high current conditions, these LEDs maintain consistent brightness and thermal stability. For the first time, the modules are equipped with long-lasting silicon lenses, delivering top performance in a compact form factor. This new generation of SMARTRIX marks a significant step forward in smart car lighting. The silicon lenses not only last longer but also allow for more flexible design options, giving manufacturers greater freedom to innovate. Designers can now incorporate advanced features into smaller spaces, aligning with the growing trend of narrow, low-profile headlights. The first version of the OSRAM SMARTRIX system is already featured in the new Jaguar E-PACE. At the International Symposium on Automotive Lighting (ISAL) in Darmstadt, Germany, from September 25th to 27th, the SMARTRIX-equipped headlights were showcased alongside other cutting-edge products like the μAFS module demonstrator, OLED taillights, and LiDAR-based autopilot sensing systems. OSRAM is continuing to develop SMARTRIX modules with durable silicon lenses for the next generation of Jaguar E-PACE headlights, further solidifying its leadership in automotive lighting innovation.
