Musk: U.S. Superhighway in Washington, DC receives "oral approval" from the government

On July 21, according to the Washington Post, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, made headlines when he tweeted that his tunneling company, The Boring Company, had received "verbal approval" from the government to construct a high-speed rail system between Washington D.C. and New York. Musk claimed that this futuristic "hyperloop" system would enable commuters to travel between the two cities in just 29 minutes. Many Twitter users were quick to question who exactly gave the approval, but Musk hasn't provided specifics. However, the Trump administration appears supportive of innovative infrastructure projects. A White House spokesperson mentioned that they’ve been engaging in "promising conversations" and are committed to transformative infrastructure initiatives. They emphasized the potential of private sector innovation. Musk followed up by explaining that the hyperloop system would connect downtown areas of various cities. Each city could feature up to tens of elevators for entry and exit. His company is developing excavation tools specifically for creating these underground networks. The envisioned system would involve passenger pods traveling at hundreds of kilometers per hour through low-pressure tubes. Despite the excitement, there are significant hurdles ahead. Leif Dormsjo, head of Washington D.C.'s transportation department, expressed ignorance regarding the project's approval process. Similarly, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's office admitted they hadn’t heard anything official. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney's spokesperson confirmed they hadn't been contacted either, emphasizing the numerous technical and logistical challenges before such a system becomes feasible. Musk has been vocal about Los Angeles’ traffic issues, which inspired much of his vision. He previously proposed underground tunnels for high-speed truck traffic and mentioned linking Los Angeles and San Francisco via hyperloop. Additionally, he hinted at the possibility of implementing this technology in Texas. Building a surface-level hyperloop faces considerable regulatory challenges. To address these, Musk is opting for an underground approach, which requires fewer permits and avoids surface-level complications. However, even underground construction presents complexities, especially concerning land rights and funding. The initial cost estimate for the D.C.-to-New York project stands at $1 billion. While Musk isn’t alone in pursuing this technology, he has taken steps to encourage competition, including open-source concepts and allowing other firms like Hyperloop One to participate. It remains to be seen how quickly and effectively these ambitious plans can come to fruition amidst regulatory, financial, and technical challenges.
