Apple ARKit once again ignited the AR field explosion point

In the past two years, the entertainment and gaming industries have seen tremendous growth, and as a result, AR technology has become more familiar to the public. However, it's fair to say that AR has faced a slowdown in development, with few major breakthroughs. In response, Apple introduced ARKit, a new platform aimed at revitalizing the AR market. Many companies and brands are now exploring this technology, and some believe that ARKit could spark a new wave of interest in augmented reality. Over the last couple of years, AR has started to make its way into everyday life, offering consumers exciting new experiences through various products. A recent report from DigitalBridge, a UK-based mixed reality company, highlights the growing importance of AR for future business opportunities. The study found that 20% of consumers expect major companies to develop AR solutions, while nearly half (49%) anticipate a significant increase in available AR apps within the next six months. AR stands for Augmented Reality, which translates to "Augmented Reality" in Chinese. It is an emerging form of human-computer interaction that allows users to engage with virtual objects in real time, creating immersive and visually stunning experiences. AR can break through physical and temporal limitations, enabling users to experience things that are impossible in the real world. The origins of AR date back to the early days of modern computing. In 1968, Ivan Sutherland, then an associate professor at Harvard University, developed the first head-mounted display called "The Sword of Damocles," which is considered the first virtual reality system. This early device used optical see-through displays and had two 6-degree trackers, but due to technological limitations at the time, it was very bulky and had to be mounted on the ceiling. AR is a powerful new medium that offers unique ways for consumers to interact with virtual content. Recently, Sketchfab, a popular 3D model platform, updated its app to support ARKit, allowing users to explore over 2 million 3D models in augmented reality. Sketchfab now claims to have the largest AR library in the world. Although it currently doesn't support ARCore, it may do so in the near future. Earlier this year, the company also began integrating 3D VR models into both iOS and Android platforms. Snapchat has also been making waves with its latest AR features. Its Sky Filters automatically detect weather conditions in photos and apply corresponding effects, giving users the ability to change environments and scenarios. Snapchat continues to roll out new AR features, including 3D Bitmoji integration and enhanced World Lenses with new objects and effects. Another example is Pixie Technologies, which uses AR combined with tracking chips to help users locate everyday items. By attaching small tags to objects and connecting them to a smartphone via Bluetooth, users can easily find lost items. With the release of iOS 11, Pixie has taken full advantage of Apple’s ARKit to enhance its offerings. DigitalBridge CEO David Levine noted that while AR hasn’t yet captured widespread public attention, Apple’s focus on this immersive technology signals a turning point. As Apple and Google compete in the AR space, it seems that we are witnessing the first mainstream moment for augmented reality. Currently, AR is still in its early stages, with many limitations in daily applications. While it has made progress in improving user experiences, it hasn’t yet reached mass adoption. However, in terms of commercial use—especially in mobile commerce—AR holds more potential than virtual reality. It’s easier and more cost-effective to implement, and we can expect to see a new ecosystem of AR experiences emerge in the future.
