Most TD terminals have been superior to other standard products in terms of quality, price, and launch time. TD mobile phone development has entered an explosive period. As of May 4, 2012, TD has a total of 564 network access terminals. In view of how TD terminals can further stabilize the foundation and evolve into the TD-LTE market, the reporter interviewed the Secretary-General of the TD Technology Forum.

Significant market size drives the TD terminal industry chain

  Reporter: What are the main reasons for the rapid progress of TD-SCDMA terminals in recent years?

Time: The total number of China Mobile users is close to 700 million, and the potential market size of TD terminals is considerable. This is also an important reason why China Mobile can successfully pull the industry chain and promote the rapid development of terminals.

After the commercialization of TD-SCDMA in 2009, under the strong promotion of China Mobile, through the joint efforts of enterprises in all links of the industry chain, the construction and optimization of the TD-SCDMA network have been basically perfected, and the development of "terminal-chip" restricts the development of TD-SCDMA The bottleneck problem has been fundamentally resolved. At present, all chip manufacturers have chips and solutions from low-end function machines to high-end smart machines. More and more domestic and foreign terminal manufacturers have entered the field of TD-SCDMA terminals, and many "name machines" with excellent market performance have emerged. ". The maturity of the network and the terminal has greatly improved the user experience. Therefore, TD-SCDMA has entered an explosive growth stage since the second half of last year.

At present, 15 domestic and foreign chip and terminal companies have joined the TD Technology Forum. They are already developing TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE chips and terminals, including a number of international chip terminal giants. Promote the industrial development process of TD terminal. The slow development of terminal chips is attributed to two points

Reporter: The TD-LTE 20,000 base station scale test network has started construction, and TD-LTE terminals are still the bottleneck. What do you think is the main reason?

Time: In the development of TD-SCDMA, the lag of terminal chips has seriously affected the development of the industry. With the development experience of TD-SCDMA, the Telecommunications Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and China Mobile have repeatedly emphasized the urgency of accelerating the development of terminal chips at the beginning of TD-LTE development. In terms of uncertain factors, frequency allocation will directly affect the design of the chip. It is different from the system equipment changes. If the frequency is changed, the entire chip or even the terminal must be changed. The uncertainty of the frequency makes the research and development investment and technical direction of the terminal chip uncertain. At present, chip manufacturers are very concerned about which frequency band TD-LTE will work in the future. From a technical point of view, there should be a frequency assignment that is more suitable for mobile communication services to TD-LTE.

Another big challenge facing terminal chips is the ever-increasing demands of people. The future network will coexist with multiple standards. The chip will face various frequency bands from 800MHz to 2.6GHz, various standards from GSM to TD-LTE, and various data rate services from voice to video interaction. Compared with base station equipment that can continuously expand capacity, terminal devices such as mobile phones have limited volume and power consumption. Due to the need to carry from GSM to TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE, they are even compatible with multiple communication technologies such as LTE-FDD, and from From 100K-level voice communication service to 100M-level data service, the chip must have the same size and size, and the function will be greatly improved, while the power consumption is lower. In the case of increased complexity, people require lower energy consumption and higher integration of terminal chips, and at the same time require lower prices, the price of smart terminals is constantly below 1,000 yuan. Overall, the task is heavy and the price is low, which poses a great challenge to the terminal chip.

Let the manufacturers see the most important return

Reporter: How to promote the development of TD-LTE chip?

Time: Although the development of TD-LTE terminal chips faces many challenges, it has made considerable progress compared to TD-SCDMA. In the first phase of the TD-LTE scale experiment, 11 chip manufacturers and multiple terminal manufacturers have already participated. For the development of TD-LTE terminal chips, perhaps it is most important for manufacturers to see returns. Can TD-LTE be used first in local areas and hot spots where high-speed data demand is relatively strong when both technical and industrial conditions permit. In this way, manufacturers not only invest, but also see returns, which will promote the development of terminal chips.

TD-LTE is a technology with independent intellectual property rights in China, so TD-LTE has unique advantages in many fields in China. For example, in areas such as security, video surveillance, early warning of urban emergencies, and public security, which are related to national and social security, TD-LTE is naturally considered to be the first choice. TD Technology Forum Secretary-General Shi Guang said: Industry applications are also a good development opportunity for TD-LTE. Compared with public mobile communications, industry applications have several characteristics: first, simple application scenarios and clear user requirements, which brings great convenience to networking; second, most industry applications are data services, data services The profits are relatively rich; third, the industry application requirements for network construction costs are not so high, and the price pressure faced by operators and equipment vendors is relatively small. There is still a long way to go before TD-LTE commercial use

Reporter: How far do you think TD-LTE is from commercial use?

Time: At present, China's TD-LTE has made gratifying progress, but there is still a certain distance from commercial use. In general, the development of TD-LTE is healthy, and the development speed is normal, which is in line with the development law of the industry. However, it can also be seen that compared with FDD commercial use, China's TD-LTE is still in the scale test stage, and there is still a long way to go before commercial use. We can go as fast as we can.

Generally speaking, a network needs to go through a large-scale networking test and a large number of users before it is commercially available. At present, China's TD-LTE has not yet experienced such a test.

Before TD-LTE is commercialized, it still needs to break through in several aspects. First, in terms of terminal chips, it is necessary to develop smart terminal chips that support multi-mode, multi-service, and multi-band, and at the same time are cheap and have low power consumption. Second, in terms of testing, there are still few solutions for business simulation test systems. There are not many domestic and foreign manufacturers that can develop mature and reliable high-speed data business simulation test systems. The TD-LTE service types and application scenarios are very complex, and the requirements for the service simulation test system are very urgent. Third, in terms of large-scale networking, China Mobile has proposed a "four network collaboration" strategy, which poses new challenges in hybrid networking. At the same time, the gap between the large-scale network test and the real large-scale commercial network is relatively large. At present, it seems that the basically mature system equipment still needs to be improved and adjusted when facing commercial use. Fourth, the issue of resources, that is, the issue of frequency. Although the radio management department has made great efforts, the frequency band assigned to the TD-LTE service is still not ideal. For mobile communication, the frequency is the outline and the outline of the list.
