TSMC and Samsung have always been in a competitive state. Recently, Qualcomm announced that its 7nm 5G chip will be manufactured by Samsung, and TSMC is once again behind Samsung. Compared to the current 10nm FinFET process, 7nm will be more dominant in some places.
Samsung announced on its official website that Qualcomm's future 5G mobile device chips will be manufactured based on their 7nm LPP process, which will introduce EUV (EUV lithography).
In May 2017, Samsung first introduced the 7nm LPP EUV process. In July of the same year, Samsung said that it will mass produce 7nm earlier than its rival TSMC in 2018.
Samsung revealed that compared to the current 10nm FinFET process, 7nm will achieve 40% reduction in area, 10% performance improvement, and 35% power consumption reduction.
Interestingly, Qualcomm also launched the X24 baseband based on the 7nm process this month, but a 4G LTE product, I don't know if Samsung is involved in the creation, after all, it was not confirmed in this press release.
Roland has said that Qualcomm's first 7nm AP is the Snapdragon 855. It seems that there is no reason to suddenly insert TSMC into the foundry.
In addition, Samsung announced in October 2017 that it is developing an 8nm intermediate process between 10nm and 7nm. It is also working with Samsung. It seems that the relationship between the two is more iron in the future.
