Audi R&D Director: Still optimistic about the ternary lithium battery route

On March 1, 2016, the 2016 Geneva International Auto Show officially opened. The Geneva Motor Show is an influential exhibition in the global automotive industry. It is also known as the “International Automobile Trend Vane” with the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Paris Motor Show, the North American Auto Show and the Tokyo Motor Show. The concept cars exhibited at the annual Geneva Motor Show are a landscape of the auto show. These concept cars have exaggerated designs that represent the concept of the future car; others are very close to mass production, basically the same design as the future production models. Technology, as well as this year's Geneva Motor Show.

At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Netease and other media held a dialogue with Audi R&D Director Stefan Knirsch. Stefan Knirsch said that in the future, Audi will deepen the Chinese market and use new technologies and methods to promote new energy vehicles. Audi will continue to do it automatically. The development of driving accelerates the rapid arrival of automatic driving; Q2 is an innovative product integrating the new technology of Audi, and Audi will more meet the younger demands of the Chinese market in the future.

The following is a dialogue record:

Q: Last night through Volkswagen Night, including today's dialogue with the president of the Volkswagen Group, we know that our Volkswagen Group will be decentralized in the future, but technically, Audi has been among the many brands of the Volkswagen Group. The technical content is relatively high. Then my question is, in the future changes of the entire Volkswagen Group's industrial chain, how do you understand Audi's future technical plan, and even the future development of the entire Volkswagen Group?

Stefan Knirsch: First of all, Volkswagen Group technology does not mean our future internal technology. This concept is different, we have to make our process design more lean, so that we can respond to the market more quickly in the future. Audi has very close cooperation with China, and China has a very important position in Audi's sales market. In fact, in the future, the cooperation mode in the technical field is the same as today. We will also let FAW-Volkswagen actively join our cooperation. For example, we have recently developed a plug-in Audi model. In the future, we will also be optimistic about the entire Chinese partner. Innovation and its flexibility.

Q: Volkswagen Night refers to the two development directions of the future public. One is a new energy vehicle, and the other is autonomous driving. What role does Audi play in these two main directions?

Stefan Knirsch: I started with this new energy vehicle. In 2018, Audi AG plans to mass-produce its first pure electric car. This car has excellent long-distance driving ability and its driving range. Up to 500 kilometers. Last night, you saw a fuel cell model on this stand. The electric car that we will introduce in 2018 will have a lot of similarities with this fuel cell car. In addition to pure electric vehicles with batteries, we are now continuing to develop fuel cell models. In terms of fuel cell vehicles, Audi is in a leading position in the Volkswagen Group and is a pioneer.

Regarding the problem of autonomous driving, in 2009, Audi has occupied all the technologies of autonomous driving. In 2009, Audi introduced the first self-driving Audi TT, in 2014, to prove that Audi is also on the track. Mastered the autonomous driving technique, which was carried out on the track at the time. In 2015, Audi's self-driving car drove from San Francisco to Las Vegas. During this trip, this self-driving car automatically drove 800 kilometers. In addition, in 2015, Audi's self-driving cars were also tested in Shanghai. At that time, we conducted road tests in a very complex urban environment. In that environment, the road conditions were very complicated. The highways and viaducts were interspersed, and the car could control this complicated situation.

In addition, in 2013, Audi AG has obtained auto-driving licenses from three states in the United States. In China in 2018, we will introduce the first A8 with automatic driving function. This A8's automatic driving function is limited in special circumstances. It allows automatic driving when the highway is jammed.

Question: What kind of fuel cell does the fuel cell just mentioned?

Stefan Knirsch: First of all, this fuel cell technology was jointly developed by Audi AG and its partner Ferrari. This fuel cell vehicle is a sporty model. Today we also showed this car on the stand. The power reached 210 kW.

Q: For the new energy vehicle, at the beginning of February, the Chinese government has a new regulation that is not allowed to use the ternary lithium battery, but to use other batteries. What impact does this have on Audi?

Stefan Knirsch: In the future, Audi will guarantee that it meets all legal requirements.

Q: Audi launched the Q2 model today. We know that the Volkswagen brand also has an SUV strategy. So, will we produce it simultaneously with Volkswagen's small SUV?

Stefan Knirsch: Actually Q2 comes from the design platform of the Volkswagen Group, so now Volkswagen and we have shared the technology.

Q: Is your electric turbocharger not limited to gasoline engines? Another problem is about the efficiency between electric vehicles and traditional vehicles and traditional diesel locomotives. Mazda they came to a conclusion that they think there is no electric vehicle. The meaning, compared with gasoline vehicles, as long as the gasoline vehicle has made certain improvements, it can completely achieve the emission of electric vehicles. What do you think? Especially in China, this matter is particularly important for China, because most of China is now, 70% to 80% of electricity is coal and electricity, and its carbon dioxide emissions are very large.

Stefan Knirsch: The day after tomorrow, you will hear about it at the financial annual meeting of Audi AG. If we look at the total energy consumption of electric vehicles now, the carbon dioxide produced by electric vehicles is lower than that of diesel vehicles. Now we are committed to further reducing the driving resistance of electric vehicles. For example, yesterday you can see an electric car with a virtual rearview mirror on Volkswagen Night, because it has no rearview mirror outside, so its Wind resistance is relatively low. In addition, there is a photovoltaic panel for solar power generation on the electric car. Through this photovoltaic panel, this electric car can walk a thousand kilometers a year.

Q: We can see Audi's products. We can see that we are still increasing R&D on SUVs and crossover models. How long do you think this trend will last? In addition, we have seen that there are reports from foreign companies that Audi will have plans for MPV models. Do you know if this news is true?

Stefan Knirsch: Actually, the Q2 is a small SUV, so this car can also prove that we are satisfied with our customers' desire for small SUVs. In addition, in the field of sedan models, Audi has done a very compact model. The development trend in China is different from our development trend here. Customers like long wheelbase. Through the lengthening of the wheelbase, we can A more spacious environment for the rear passengers. In the future MPV, we can't make any statement today.

Q: Is Audi mixed with this kind of oil and electricity? It is similar to the technology of Prius. It has been completely abandoned. If it is abandoned, why? What is the reason? Another one just mentioned that the car network, Q2 is a sim card, why choose this way, instead of choosing a smart phone hotspot to access the Internet? Because I think the sim card is very troublesome, and there is one more card, and I have to pay.

Stefan Knirsch: First of all, the company has two hybrid models in the current product line, Q5 and A8. In the transition to zero-emission models, we are more optimistic about plug-in hybrid technology. We decided to use this technology, and it is also related to China's new energy vehicle regulations, because if it is in accordance with China's new energy vehicle regulations, it can enjoy preferential policies.

Another second question relates to the sim card. In fact, you can connect your smartphone to your car and you can use all the online services on your phone. We don't have a fee, there is no data transmission line, we hope that they have the opportunity to use the sim card in our car, the sim card in our car allows free use of all online services within three years. That is for data transmission and is free.

Q: The first plug-in hybrid car that is going to be made in China now, what is the progress now, is there a time to go public?

Stefan Knirsch: Now that the development of this plug-in hybrid model has been researched and developed, we can already achieve mass production, and we will gradually put it on the market in the near future. We develop this technology in conjunction with our partners at our R&D center in Beijing.

Q: What aspects of FAW-Volkswagen's work in the development of plug-in hybrids?

Stefan Knirsch: Our partners are actively involved in technology development in China, such as battery research and development. In this regard, we also intend to localize production in the future.
