The Gospel of the Wolves: New Technology Makes LED Lights Simulate Sunlight

In recent years, lighting technology has made great progress, and even so, we still have not been able to accurately simulate the sun. Maybe we can simulate special lights suitable for plant growth, and also be able to change the color temperature of plants through a variety of lighting, but artificial lighting can never match natural daylight.


Today, this vision is expected to be realized. Paolo di Trapani, an associate professor at the University of Insubria in Italy, invented a technique to scatter white LED light sources using panels coated with invisible nanoparticles to obtain light that is close to the sun. In the near future, it is even possible to create a sun that can be turned on in a small compartment without windows.

In the previous development process, most of the technicians focused their attention on the light source, trying to find the same source as the solar spectrum. This is the only time to consider the basic fact that the sunlight we receive is not only related to the spectrum of the sun, but also the result of the interaction of light with the atmosphere.

This new technology perfectly simulates the physical Rayleigh scattering process in which air molecules scatter solar radiation. The prototype panel is 5.9 feet long and 33.5 feet wide, with two different sizes of nanomaterials placed on different parts of the panel to separate a certain wavelength. Among them, the white LED array will spread into the "blue sky" effect, mainly composed of blue wavelengths, and the warm yellow yellow spots simulate the sun. The team also developed another panel to simulate other outdoor lighting conditions, from dazzling daylight to dusk.

Di Trapani and his team plan to sell through CoeLux of Insubria University and hope to get a large-scale promotion in the next year or two.
