Sun Fuchun, Tsinghua University: There will be four sets of service robots in the future

Text / Quiet

The data shows that in the past five years, the growth rate of China's robot industry has basically maintained a growth rate of over 20%, which has become an important force for the growth of the global robot industry. However, Xin Guobin, deputy minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, believes that there is still a problem of low level and repeated construction in China's robotics industry. In this regard, Sun Fuchun, a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University, also believes that China's robotics industry follows the trend. The development of robots is inseparable from the ability of independent intellectual property rights and independent innovation. Innovation is the source of robot's future development.

So, how can we change the low-end ecology of China's high-end industries? Sun Fuchun believes that to grasp the trend of future innovation, China should be the next generation of robots, changing lanes to overtake service robots.

Worry about excess investment in robots

Compared with last year's World Robot Conference, this year's conference not only attracted more manufacturers and audiences in the exhibition hall, but the theme forum also witnessed full-scale games. Statistics from the International Federation of Robotics show that in 2016 the scale of the global robotics industry has exceeded US$20 billion, an increase of 14.5%, and is expected to reach US$23.2 billion in 2017. As far as the Chinese robotics industry is concerned, the growth rate in the past five years has basically remained above 20%. Especially in the field of industrial robots, 59,000 units were produced in the first half of this year (an increase of 52% compared to the same period of last year). China will become the world’s largest application market for five consecutive years, and its proportion in the global industrial robot market will increase from 1/4 to nearly 1/3. .

However, Xin Guobin, deputy director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, also warned that there is a problem with the repeated construction of the robot industry in China. According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 40 robot industrial parks built and under construction in the country. In just a few years, the number of robotics companies has exceeded 800. However, in terms of self-owned brands, most robots in China are low-end and mid-range products, and there is a risk that high-end industries will be low-end products and low-end products will have excess capacity.

In this regard, Professor Sun Fuchun of the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University also believes that the Chinese robot industry does have such problems. "This is related to our country's system. The government says that robots and artificial intelligence are very important. They are all on the swarm. But they do not combine local needs."

Compared to other countries, China has sufficient funds and a large number of outstanding talents. However, in terms of high-end robots, it still relies on imports. Therefore, Sun Fuchun thinks that China's robot industry urgently needs to improve its quality. So what does it depend on to improve the quality of money and talent?

Sun Fuchun gave three suggestions: The first is to unite the major research institutions, including the strength of institutions to do public relations; second is to widely use international cooperation to learn from abroad; and to promote the use of the third,

Lane changeover service robot

Whether it is the joint research institutions or international cooperation, the most important thing is to enhance the development of independent intellectual property rights and independent innovation capabilities. "Innovation is the source of future development of robots." Sun Fuchun said, "I think that innovation is the most important thing. How do we achieve innovation? I think we must grasp the trend of future innovation in robotics. What China should do is the next generation of robots."

Here, Sun Fuchun mentioned the frequently mentioned four-piece family service: cooking robots, cleaning robots, security robots, and companion robots.

“The future demand in these areas will be great,” Sun Fuchun said. “Bill Gates once said that robots will enter the home in the future, just as PCs now enter the home. The robots mentioned here are service robots.”

Sun Fuchun thinks that service robots are the most pressing type of robots. By increasing the R&D service robots, they will drive the industrial transformation and increase China's GDP, which is also an opportunity for China to change lanes.
