New 256Mb devices with read bandwidth up to 333MBps in a small pin package

Cypress Semiconductor, Inc., a global leader in embedded systems solutions, today announced the availability of a 256Mb NOR HyperFlashTM product. The device is the 3.0V S26KL256S HyperFlash, the industry's first flash memory to support the high-bandwidth, low-pin HyperBusTM interface. The device is ideal for high-performance applications such as automotive dashboards, industrial automation, communication systems, and medical devices that require the highest read bandwidth for fast boot-ups, which also require fewer pins. Reduce package size and PCB cost.
HyperFlash products have a maximum operating frequency of 166MHz, 1.8V products can achieve up to 333MBps double data rate (DDR) read bandwidth, and 3.0V products can achieve 200MBps. The 256Mb HyperFlash device is available in a space-saving 48-mm2 24-ball package with high reliability and an operating temperature range of -40oC to +125oC. Cypress's HyperFlash memory family is available in 3.0V and 1.8V operating capacities and is available in 128Mb, 256Mb and 512Mb capacities. Cypress's HyperFlash devices provide a seamless migration path from Quad SPI to dual Quad SPI to HyperFlash, allowing system applications to achieve varying levels of flash performance based on companion compatible controllers. OEMs can therefore launch different models with the same design.
Hiro Ino, senior director of Cypress's NOR flash memory products, said: "The instant boot system in automotive, industrial and communications applications has become a trend. The HyperBus interface was first released in 2014, and more and more chipset vendors are adopting HyperBus high-performance solutions in their next-generation products. Processors that publicly announce support for the HyperBus interface include Freescale's MAC57D5xx Automotive DIS MCU, Cypress's FM4 S6E2DH Universal MCU, and Cypress's TraveoTM S6J324C and S6J326C automotive MCUs. Cypress is working closely with many processor companies, and dozens of platforms are being developed to support the HyperBus interface.
About Cypress HyperBus Interface
Cypress's HyperBus efficient 12-pin interface includes an 8-pin address/data bus, a differential clock (two signals), a chip select and a controller read data latch - all of which help Reduce the cost of the entire system by reducing the number of pins. Memory based on this interface reduces system latency and enriches the user experience. Cypress's HyperBus interface can be used in a wide range of high performance applications such as automotive dashboards, infotainment/navigation systems, handheld display devices, digital cameras, projectors, industrial automation, communication systems, medical devices and appliances.
Availability
Cypress's 3.0V, 256Mb S26KL256S HyperFlash is currently in the sample phase and is expected to go into production in the third quarter of 2015. Both the 3.0V and 1.8V versions will be available in a market-compatible 6 mm x 8 mm ball grid array (BGA) package. It currently supports an industrial + temperature range of -40oC to +105oC. Cypress will later release a version that supports the extended temperature range of -40oC to +125oC. The 3.0V and 1.8V 512Mb HyperFlash are currently in the sample stage, and the 128Mb product will be sampled in the third quarter of 2015.
