Researchers from Korea Advanced Science and Technology (KAIST) today developed a new type of indoor positioning system that uses WiFi signal strength to determine the current location of a smartphone without GPS signals, and establishes the current map on the current map through WiFi strength "WiFi fingerprint", the researchers install software that can track the WiFi signals of other nearby smartphones on the mobile phone, and use the "WiFi fingerprint" to locate when the phone is connected to the WiFi network.
According to KAIST research, it takes 30 minutes to collect and update the current WiFi map data within a week, and it is embedded in the consumer ’s smartphone through the module. They have collected more than 7000 to test the feasibility of this method. WiFi fingerprints and map data inside large shopping malls in more than 4 regions in Korea.
