NEC successfully applied OpenFlow network control technology to mobile network

Recently, NEC announced that it has successfully applied the next-generation network technology OpenFlow (Note 1) to mobile networks to achieve dynamic optimized path control on mobile networks. This is a major breakthrough for OpenFlow, which could only be applied to fixed networks before.

This technology can use modules to collect the usage of multiple base stations according to different mobile communication methods, identify the location information, electric field strength, usage of communication resources in the mobile network, and the clutter of the mobile loopback network to determine the best Mobile communication path.

This technology can dynamically switch multiple mobile communication methods in communication base stations and mobile loopback networks composed of network line switches, servers, etc., thereby improving the quality of service. It can also save energy and reduce emissions by turning off the power of low-load base stations.

NEC has been engaged in global pioneering research and development for next-generation networks. It has used OpenFlow technology to try to develop "programmable flow switches" (Note 2); used the network between Japan and the United States to conduct verification experiments; and also jointly established Clean Slate with Stanford University Laboratory.

The results of this R & D are the basic technologies that use OpenFlow and are implemented on the basis of the original fixed network, and can perform efficient and flexible network management on fast and broadband mobile networks.

The application of this technology can solve the following problems.

1. Dynamically switch among multiple mobile communication methods

When the mobile communication is mixed and the communication environment deteriorates, the communication method is dynamically switched to provide the service quality necessary for the communication service to the end user.

WiMAX and WiFi were used as examples of mobile communication methods in the experiment. It was verified that when the communication status of one party of the video call is not good, it can automatically switch to other communication methods to achieve smooth network switching.

2. Energy saving of mobile loopback network

During the night when traffic is relatively light during the day, network paths can be pooled to turn off excess relay base stations to save energy.

Therefore, this technology will become the basic technology for mobile operators to reduce operation and management costs and develop new mobile communication services.

In the future, NEC will also use OpenFlow to continue to develop network application management technologies that can comprehensively manage fixed and mobile networks.
