A method of making glass or similar materials more transparent can improve the efficiency of LED devices, such as flat screens.
The project, led by Ryan McCarron, a Ph.D. student at King's College London, successfully introduced gold nanofilm into glass to scatter light.
In general, flat-panel TVs and other LED-mounted devices are only considered to be of degraded quality as the viewing angle becomes more acute. From an aesthetic point of view, this only limits the efficiency of these devices.
“If you use glass or a material other than the luminescent layer on one interface, a large part of the light will be trapped inside.†McCarron told the engineer, “Whenever a beam of light passes through a certain angle – critical angle All the light is reflected and not passed."
"So only a small range of beams can pass through, and the actual transmission rate ratio is much lower than the theory."
His solution to this problem is to apply a layer of nano-coating to the glass with a specific geometry. This method promotes scattering by manipulating the so-called "surface plasmons" between the material contact faces.
The surface plasmon is the intermediate stage on both sides of the grating, and can be separated from the other side by the inter-line propagation of the grating.
Currently, the project team is using metal gold as a raw material, and McCarron said that although it is easy to operate, this method is also applicable to cheaper materials such as aluminum, which can save costs.
McCarron said that this method can be used in many other applications, such as biochemical sensing technology, integrated optoelectronics, photovoltaic cells and organic LEDs.
