VR technology is still in a relatively quiet phase, with some people losing hope and becoming pessimistic. However, HTC remains optimistic about the future of VR, firmly believing that the technology is not outdated and will experience a resurgence soon.
At the VIVE Developer Summit (VDC2017), HTC officially launched the VIVE WAVE VR open platform. This initiative aims to provide developers with a unified development environment, streamlining the process of creating mobile VR content and enhancing user experiences across high-performance devices.
The platform has already attracted 12 major hardware partners, including iQiyi, Storm Mirror, Bird Watch, Xiaopai Technology, Skyworth Cool Open, Hisense Gathering, Chuangtong Lianda, Yijing Virtual, IDEALENS Virtual World, Nubia, 360 Mobile Phone, and Quanta Computer. These companies have expressed their intention to integrate VIVE WAVE and the corresponding VIVE PORT open content platform into future products.
This move marks a significant step toward reducing fragmentation in the Chinese mobile VR market. With Vive Wave, developers can now create and distribute cross-hardware VR content through a unified platform and application store. Over 35 selected domestic and international content teams have developed high-quality mobile VR content for the platform, with 14 of them showcasing their work at the summit.
In addition to the platform launch, HTC also demonstrated its highly anticipated VR all-in-one device: the Vive Focus. Equipped with inside-out tracking technology and supporting six degrees of freedom (6DoF), the device features a Snapdragon 835 chip and is designed to run on the Vive Wave platform. While hardware specifications and pricing details remain undisclosed, the device represents a major advancement in mobile VR.
Wang Chongqing, President of HTC Vive China, emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing market fragmentation and offering more revenue opportunities for developers. “Vive Wave brings a consistent user experience across different price points and device types, making high-quality VR accessible to mass consumers,†he said. He also expressed excitement about the upcoming Vive Focus, which promises a portable, high-end VR experience.
According to insiders, the current version of Vive Focus is a developer edition, with pricing expected to be announced at CES 2018 and a potential release in Q1 2018.
Furthermore, HTC announced a global partnership with Unity Technologies, one of the leading VR development platforms. This collaboration allows developers to easily upload their content to Viveport, integrating it directly into Unity’s ecosystem. Unity will also incorporate Vive’s in-app payment and VR advertising features, providing new monetization opportunities for developers in China and the Asia-Pacific region.
To further encourage innovation, HTC launched the Viveport Content Competition (VDA2), targeting developers in the global VR and AR space. More details about the competition, including award categories and selection processes, will be revealed in December.
