Virtual Reality (VR) technology is still in a relatively quiet phase, with some people losing hope and doubting its future. However, HTC remains optimistic, firmly believing that VR is not yet outdated and will experience a resurgence. At the VIVE Developer Summit (VDC2017), HTC launched the VIVE WAVE VR open platform, aiming to bring more opportunities to developers and users alike.
The VIVE WAVE platform combines development tools and supporting services, enabling third-party partners to streamline mobile VR content creation and enhance the user experience on high-performance devices. Several major hardware partners, including iQiyi, Storm Mirror, Bird Watch, Xiaopai Technology, Skyworth Cool Open, Hisense Gathering, Chuangtong Lianda, Yijing Virtual, IDEALENS Virtual World, Nubia, 360 Mobile Phone, and Quanta Computer, have expressed interest in integrating VIVE WAVE and the corresponding VIVE PORT open content platform into their future products.
This move marks a significant step toward reducing the fragmentation of the mobile VR market. With VIVE WAVE, developers can now create and distribute cross-hardware VR content through a unified platform and application store, offering a more consistent experience for users across different devices.
More than 35 domestic and international content development teams have already created high-quality mobile VR content for VIVE WAVE, with 14 of them showcasing their work at the summit. Additionally, HTC demonstrated its highly anticipated all-in-one VR headset, the Vive Focus.
The Vive Focus features inside-out tracking technology, supporting six degrees of freedom (6DoF), and is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip to support the VIVE WAVE platform. While specific hardware details and pricing have not been officially announced, the device is expected to provide a premium VR experience in a portable form.
Wang Chongqing, President of HTC Vive China, emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing the challenges of market fragmentation and offering more revenue opportunities for developers. He stated, “VIVE WAVE is designed for various price points and types of mobile VR devices, delivering a more consistent user experience so that mass consumers can enjoy high-quality VR content.â€
According to insiders, the current version of Vive Focus is a developer edition, and its official price may be revealed at CES 2018, with a potential release in the first quarter of 2018.
In addition to the VIVE WAVE launch, HTC also announced a global strategic partnership with Unity Technologies. This collaboration aims to simplify the process for developers to upload content to Viveport directly from Unity’s platform. Unity will integrate Viveport into its ecosystem, making it easier for developers to access the VIVE WAVE SDK. Furthermore, Unity will incorporate Vive's in-app payment and VR advertising capabilities into its development system, opening up new revenue streams for VR developers in China and the Asia-Pacific region.
To further encourage innovation, HTC officially launched the new Viveport Content Competition (VDA2) for developers in the global VR and AR space. More information about the competition, including categories, selection process, and awards, will be announced in December this year.
