In order to improve the quality of police training and to guide them on how to deal with complex situations, a police department in Scranton, Pennsylvania, has turned its attention to virtual reality.
For the police, traditional classroom teaching and shooting practice methods are not enough to prepare them for real combat.
The Pennsylvania Crime Department and the Crime Justice Assistance Foundation allowed Scranton's department to create a new simulator that could create a 300-degree field of view using a borderless screen and five digital cameras that interacted with the screen.
The system is capable of reconstructing hundreds of uses of force, which may include sudden situations involving people with mental problems in order to better reproduce all the situations that the police may face.
Police Chief Carl Graziano said: "This is a feeling of being close to reality, not reality." It really shows the sense of the officer in the training atmosphere. And really make you believe that you are in that situation. â€
