In recent years, the automotive industry in China has experienced significant transformation, driven by rapid technological advancements. Many Chinese IT companies have entered the automotive sector, establishing multiple electric vehicle brands, while traditional automakers are also accelerating their efforts. This shift marks a new era for China's auto industry, with a strong emphasis on independent research and development, particularly in power systems. Several manufacturers are now developing or preparing to mass-produce self-developed DCTs (Dual Clutch Transmissions) and hybrid systems, signaling a growing trend toward localized innovation.
At the CTI China Forum, Great Wall Motor announced the successful development of the first 7DCT450, a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission independently developed and manufactured in China. Zheng Lipeng, deputy dean of the Great Wall Automotive Transmission Research Institute, provided an in-depth overview of the project, covering its development process, technical features, engineering capabilities, and testing conditions. The project was launched in April 2014 and successfully entered the market in April 2017, achieving production within just three years.
The 7DCT450 is designed with a compact structure that fits various vehicle platforms, offering high output performance and excellent supplier integration in parts, software, calibration, and production equipment. It is currently compatible with four engine models and operates under Euro 5 standards, with plans to meet Euro 6 emissions in the future. The transmission is integrated across several models, including H2, VV7, and H7, showcasing its versatility and wide application potential.
In terms of product positioning, Great Wall Motor chose DCT over AT due to its advantages in mounting, gear ratio span, and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance. DCT offers better shift quality, dynamic characteristics, and fuel efficiency improvements of over 20%, along with lower mold costs and easier learning from manual transmission development.
The 7DCT450 is technically advanced, featuring low-energy system design, ultra-low viscosity lubricants, a dual-pump system, and a highly reliable clutch and cooling system. Its control strategy ensures optimal shift performance, while advanced CAE simulations and software development enhance reliability and safety. The transmission also includes an intelligent cooling system, electronic parking function, and precise shift control logic.
Great Wall Motor’s Xushui factory, located in Hebei, is fully equipped to produce and test the 7DCT450. With a total area of 145,000 square meters, the facility achieved initial production capacity of 500,000 units in March 2017, with plans to expand to 1 million units by 2018. The factory handles everything from shaft and gear machining to final assembly and testing, ensuring high-quality output.
In addition, Great Wall Motor has developed comprehensive bench and vehicle test technologies. The company used 20 transmission assembly gantries and 9 component rigs to accelerate design improvements, and conducted extensive testing under extreme conditions, including high altitude, high temperature, and harsh environments, to ensure stability and safety.
Overall, the 7DCT450 represents a major milestone in China's automotive industry, showcasing the country's growing capability in advanced transmission technology and setting a new standard for innovation and quality.
