Today’s automotive industry is experiencing fierce competition, but it seems that the focus has shifted away from quality battles towards price wars. For consumers, the quality of a vehicle isn’t something they can easily assess over just a few years, while the price remains a key factor influencing their purchasing decision. In response to this trend, not only have domestic SUVs continuously lowered their price thresholds, but even joint venture brands have been forced to initiate discount promotions. Reports indicate that models from Honda have also seen significant price reductions this year, particularly in the SUV segment.
However, Honda isn’t sitting idly by. The updated version of its classic SUV, the Honda CR-V, has hit the market with a starting price under 170,000 yuan, making it highly competitive. Yet, Honda isn’t resting on its laurels. A larger, seven-seater SUV, the BR-V, which is essentially the CR-V’s sibling, is set to make its debut soon. Equipped with a four-wheel-drive system, the BR-V promises to be a strong contender in the growing demand for spacious, practical vehicles.

The Honda BR-V represents a well-engineered SUV offering from Honda. Its design deviates from the current lineup of Honda SUVs, adopting a more modern and bold aesthetic. The front grille showcases the brand’s latest family design language, with trapezoidal elements and angular fog lights adding a touch of sophistication. Additionally, the BR-V comes equipped with black accents around the wheels, along with body cladding and a lower bumper guard, enhancing its rugged and sporty appearance.

As a compact SUV, the BR-V boasts dimensions of 4455/1735/1650mm with a wheelbase of 2660mm. Despite its relatively compact size, it offers seating for up to seven passengers, arranged in a 2+3+2 configuration. Although slightly shorter than the domestic CR-V, it still manages to provide ample space for families and travelers alike.
Interestingly, the BR-V is currently available in markets such as India and Thailand, where it has garnered significant attention. In India, the starting price is approximately INR 875,000 (around RMB 85,400), while in Thailand, prices range from THB 750,000 (about RMB 138,000) for the base model to THB 820,000 (approximately RMB 150,000) for the fully-equipped version.
Inside, the BR-V’s cabin is characterized by its layered design, with functional buttons on the center console arranged in an unconventional yet practical manner. Configurations include dual front airbags, an electronic stability control system, and hill-start assist. The BR-V’s interior is highlighted by its three-row, seven-seat layout, with an air conditioning vent above the second row ensuring comfort for all passengers.

Under the hood, the BR-V’s petrol variant is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine producing 119 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque. While the gasoline version lacks the robust low-end torque of its diesel counterpart, it still provides a smooth driving experience. Honda has paired this engine with a newly-developed six-speed manual transmission, as well as a CVT option sourced from the City series, offering simulated seven-speed gear changes and paddle shifters for enhanced driver engagement.

In addition to the petrol version, a diesel variant is also available. Given the current popularity of seven-seater SUVs in the Asian market, particularly in China, the BR-V’s entry into the domestic market seems inevitable. With its competitive pricing and practical features, the BR-V could carve out a niche in the crowded SUV segment. All it needs now is the right timing to make its debut in China, which could happen sooner rather than later.
With these innovations and offerings, Honda is clearly positioning itself to capture a slice of the rapidly expanding SUV market. Whether through the CR-V or its new sibling, the BR-V, Honda is demonstrating its commitment to delivering value-driven options for consumers seeking versatile and reliable vehicles.
