In the past, OLED screens were mainly supplied by South Korean companies, while China lacked the core technology. Despite being a major manufacturing country, China had long been dependent on foreign suppliers. However, this is changing. BOE has now launched its 6th generation of flexible AMOLEDs in Chengdu, marking a significant step toward breaking the monopoly held by South Korean manufacturers. This development signals a new era for China's OLED industry.
For BOE, the goal is to become a global leader in display technology, aiming to catch up with giants like Samsung. Recently, they started mass production at their sixth-generation flexible AMOLED line in Chengdu, which marks a turning point for domestic AMOLED flexibility and challenges the dominance of Korean firms.
At the recent BOE Global Innovation Partners Conference, Chairman Wang Dongsheng announced that the Hefei 10.5-generation line, originally scheduled for 2018, will go into production ahead of schedule in December. This milestone underscores BOE's rapid progress and growing influence in the global market.
The 10.5-generation TFT-LCD production line, designed to produce 8K panels, is one of the largest projects in the industry. With a monthly capacity of 120,000 sheets, it represents the highest generation and largest size of liquid crystal production. The project, initiated in 2015, is set to begin mass production later this year and is also the most expensive single investment in China’s display sector. A second 10.5-generation line in Wuhan is currently under construction.
Looking ahead, BOE is focusing on both 5G and 8K high-definition panels, while continuing to expand its flexible OLED production. The company has already made inroads into Apple’s supply chain, signaling its growing recognition in the global market.
Domestic screen manufacturers are showing strong determination to close the gap with South Korean rivals. With continuous technological advancements and strategic investments, China’s display industry is rapidly evolving and preparing to challenge global leaders.
