Liang Sicheng--a generation of masters in the history of modern Chinese architecture

Mr. Liang Sicheng (1901 - 1972) Liang Sicheng (1901~1972), a famous architect in China, a professor at Tsinghua University, a member of the Chinese Communist Party, and a native of Xinhui County, Guangdong Province. Married to Lin Huiyin in Vancouver, Canada in 1928 Professor Liang Sicheng was born in Japan on April 20, 1901. He studied at Tsinghua University in Beijing from 1915 to 1923. He went to the United States to study at Cornell University in 1924. He soon transferred to the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1927, he received a master's degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1928, he studied at the Harvard University Art Institute. After returning to China in 1928, he founded the Department of Architecture at Shenyang Northeastern University and served as professor and department head until 1931. From 1931 to 1946, he served as a researcher and director of the French Department of China Construction Society. In 1991, he also served as a former researcher at the Academia Sinica. In 1946, he founded the Department of Architecture for Tsinghua University as a professor and department head until 1972. During this period, he was also employed as a visiting professor at Yale University in the United States in November 1946 and June 1947. From January 1947 to June 1947, as a representative of China, he served as a consultant to the United Nations Building Design Committee. In 1948, he received an honorary doctorate from Princeton University. After liberation, he joined the China Democratic League in 1952 and joined the Communist Party of China in 1959. He was elected as the representative of the First, Second and Third National People's Congresses, a member of the Standing Committee of the Third Session of the National People's Congress, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC, and a member of the Standing Committee of the NLD Central Committee. Deputy Director of the Monument Construction Committee and Vice President of the Beijing Branch of the National Science Popularization Association, died in Beijing on January 9, 1972. Professor Liang Sicheng has been engaged in the construction education for a long time and has made important contributions to the cause of architectural education. In terms of academic research, Professor Liang Sicheng has systematically investigated and studied ancient Chinese architecture since the 1930s. Many of his monographs and papers on ancient Chinese architecture written during his lifetime have high academic value.
